The Preacher and His Work, Wendell Winkler (c. 1987)

  1. As a preacher, buy books! Budget for it. Even on a small income, you can build a library.
  2. Consider becoming a book dealer. You can save 25-40%. Consult discount stores.
  3. Buy books categorically. Don’t just buy books that are in your main area of interest, but have some on all subjects you need to stay abreast of (apologetics, debate, doctrine, devotion, reference, current events, marriage/family, brotherhood issues, youth, women, etc.).
  4. Write for and keep a set of catalogues, both used and new. Bookmark websites where you can find good deals.
  5. Don’t forget to use the church library. You don’t have to purchase a book if you have access to it.
  6. Buy paperback when possible. If it is a reference book you intend to use over and over, buy a hardback.
  7. Keep jackets on books to protect them.
  8. Get autographed copies when possible.
  9. Let relatives know of your book needs so they can give them as gifts.
  10. Keep a “to buy” list. Ask older preachers/well-read preachers what books have helped them.
  11. Buy advisably. Do not buy a book on a whim, but make sure it is worth the money. Make sure there is not another book you need more.
  12. Use your library. Books are not written to look good on a bookshelf. They are our tools to help us learn the Word of God and teach it to a lost world.
